Peace and Grace to you all,
During the month of September we celebrate the Coptic New Year which is associated with the Martyrs. The life of martyrdom is not as we often think a thing of the past, as we hear daily of people dying for their Orthodox faith in Egypt and many other countries around the world. In this issue we will briefly present a few examples of martyrs who chose to die rather than defile their bodies. Then we will shed light on who is the martyr and how can we share in the lives of martyrs. Finally we will discuss how the early monks viewed the monastic life as a spiritual martyrdom.
For this occasion, we have also posted two lives of saints who were martyred in the third century A.D.
- St Dymiana and the 40 virgins, which is written and edited by the nuns of St Dymiana Convent in El Barary. We Thank them warmly for providing us with the text to post for everyone to read.
- Sts Perpetua and Felicity, who were martyred in the beginning of the third century. The text is one of the ancient martyr text that was written by St Perpetua herself.
God Bless you all,
