Happy Coptic New Year to you all,

As most of you know, the Coptic calendar started by the end of the era of the Roman persecution to the Christians, therefore the Coptic New Year is a celebration of the Martyrs. Martyrdom is closely associated with the virtue of virginity which is also a monastic virtue, consequently in this month issue we thought to show how all this ties together in a life of a saint from the fourth century who is a Martyr and a Virgin. We hope you enjoy it.

On the 8^th day of the month of Kiahk, the monks of St Anthony’s monastery commemorate the departure of one of the contemporary monastic saint of the twentieth century. Fr Yostos of St Anthony Monastery was an example of a monk who lived the monastic life as the monks we read about in the Paradise of the Holy Fathers. Despite his silence he was able to bring back many to the spiritual path. It is with great pleasure that we would like to present to you some of this saint’s life to be an example in our lives. We have also attached a very rare audio recording of the saints voice where he reads the Gospel in Coptic as well as an conversation (in Arabic) with some lay people where he repeatedly asks them his famous question “What time is it?”
